I even tried to see if I could put together a feature film based on her book. I’d read Alanna’s book years ago called The Colonel and I was fascinated with it. Steve Binder: I was shocked when Alanna Nash told the story about the Colonel and the pepper - you’ll have to see the documentary to learn more. I said, “This documentary isn’t that and we can’t have anything made up in it,” and they gave me their word and I told them, “OK, then, then I’m aboard and I’ll cooperate any way you want me to,” and we had a great relationship while they were making it. But it made for great drama and certainly added to the success of Baz’s movie, which I loved. The Colonel never fired Elvis in front of a live audience in Las Vegas.

And I said, “If you can promise me that everything in the documentary will be honest and you’re not going to take literary license, I’ll do it.”Įven Baz with the Elvis movie took some creative license, like I was never at the Hollywood sign. And we’d like to hear your point of view or we’d like to make a documentary based on your experience. And we think that’ll be unique because of all the projects that have been done on the ’68 Special. We want to do a buddy story about you and Elvis. So I said, “It really doesn’t make any sense for me just to do another one.” And they said, “But Steve, let us at least pitch it to you, because we think it’s totally different.” And they sat down and said, “What we want to do is not a story about Elvis. I just don’t want to do another one.” And especially after Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie came out, I got very close to Baz and became a creative consultant for him on the movie. There has been television movie of the weeks that have been shown over the years about the ’68 Special. I said, “Look guys, there have been many books written on the ’68 Special. Steve Binder: When my partner, Spencer Proffer, and documentary filmmaker John Scheinfeld approached me, I told them I wasn’t interested.
